To reduce a video's file size, open Imagyc's video converter, choose MP4, start with 720p resolution and select Medium quality. Convert the file, check its size and watch a sample before sending it through WhatsApp or email.

720p is a practical starting point for phone viewing. It does not guarantee that a long recording will fit an attachment limit. Processing happens on your device without uploading the video.

WhatsApp and email size limits

These official limits were checked on October 13, 2026. Pay attention to the sending method:

DestinationOfficial guidanceSource
WhatsApp video sent as mediaStandard maximum of 100 MB/720p on faster connections; 64 MB/480p on slower ones1
WhatsApp documentUp to 2 GB per file1
Personal GmailUp to 25 MB of attachments combined2
Outlook.com25 MB for the message, including text and attachments3
Outlook applicationDocumentation lists 20 MB for internet email accounts; business accounts may differ4

The document limit is different from the video limit when sharing from your gallery. Business API limits are also different from the consumer WhatsApp app.

For email, leave room below the limit and consider the recipient's account too. A target of 15–18 MB can help with a short clip, but follow your provider's actual rules. A sharing link is often more useful for long recordings than extreme compression.

What makes a video smaller?

Resolution

Resolution describes the pixels in each frame. Reducing 4K or 1080p to 720p gives the encoder less visual information to represent.

A landscape 16:9 frame at 720p is 1280 × 720; the equivalent portrait frame is 720 × 1280. Keep the aspect ratio. Enlarging a smaller source does not reveal new detail.

Bitrate and duration

Bitrate is data per second. Duration multiplied by average total bitrate accounts for most of a video's size. Lowering the resolution while keeping a high bitrate may save less space than expected.

Approximate decimal MB = total kbps × seconds ÷ 8,000.

For a two-minute video with 128 kbps audio, the calculated estimates are:

Video bitrateApproximate size
1 Mbps16.9 MB
2 Mbps31.9 MB
4 Mbps61.9 MB

These are mathematical examples, not measured Imagyc results. Headers and variable bitrate change the final size. Imagyc offers quality levels (High, Medium and Light) rather than a bitrate number: pick a level and check the output.

Compress a video step by step

  1. Keep the original and open the video converter.
  2. Add the video already saved on your device.
  3. Choose MP4 and start at 720p, keeping its orientation.
  4. Select Medium quality for a first test.
  5. Convert and compare the output size with the destination limit.
  6. Watch motion, faces and any small on-screen text.
  7. If necessary, lower quality or resolution and test again from the original.

Lossy encoding discards information, so repeated re-encoding can introduce further damage. 5 Use the original for each trial rather than compressing the previous compressed copy.

When should you keep more pixels?

A product demonstration may need texture detail; a screen recording may depend on tiny labels. Try 1080p at an appropriate quality, or share a link if compression makes the important parts difficult to read.

Changing MOV or MKV to MP4 alone may barely change the size. The existing tracks can sometimes be copied into the new container. Meaningful size reduction usually requires changing how those tracks are encoded.

Frequently asked questions

Will every 720p video fit WhatsApp or email?

No. A long 720p recording can still be large. Check the finished file and the rules for the actual sending method.

Does sending as a document preserve quality?

It provides a way to share the file without the usual media recompression. The recipient still needs support for its container and codecs.

Will putting the video in a ZIP help?

Usually very little. Already compressed video often has little room for further ZIP compression.

Can I compress a video on my phone?

Yes, when its browser, supported codecs and memory allow it. A computer can be a more practical choice for long or high-resolution files.
