To convert WhatsApp audio to MP3, save the voice note as a file first. Open Imagyc's audio converter, select the saved file, choose MP3 and convert. For spoken messages, 128 kbps is a useful starting point.

There is no need to play the message into another microphone. You convert the actual audio file, and Imagyc processes it in your browser without uploading it.

What are Ogg and Opus?

WhatsApp voice notes commonly arrive with an .opus or .ogg extension. Ogg holds the audio data; Opus is the codec that compresses the sound. Ogg/Opus is a standardized combination, and Opus is designed to handle speech and music efficiently. 1, 2

An audio attachment is not necessarily a voice note. Someone can send an MP3 song or an M4A recording as a document, so check the original file before deciding it needs conversion.

Find a WhatsApp voice note on Android

Start with the conversation rather than searching the entire phone:

  1. Open the chat and download the voice note.
  2. Press and hold the message, then look for Share, possibly under the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose an app that can save the attachment to an accessible folder.
  4. Remember that folder and select the file from the converter.

If you prefer a file manager, a common location is Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes. Received audio attachments may be in WhatsApp Audio. Older installations may use WhatsApp/Media.

Treat these as likely locations, not universal instructions. Android versions, phone makers and WhatsApp Business can change the layout. Android's scoped storage also limits which files other apps can access. A folder that is hidden from your file manager does not mean the recording was deleted. 3

Save WhatsApp audio on iPhone

WhatsApp's private storage is not exposed as an ordinary folder in the Files app. Export the message instead:

  1. Press and hold the voice note in the chat.
  2. Choose Forward, select the note and tap the sharing button.
  3. If Save to Files is available, choose a folder under On My iPhone and save it.
  4. Select that saved file in the converter.

The menu can vary between versions. If Save to Files is missing, WhatsApp documents emailing the audio note to yourself; save the attachment afterward. That alternative uses your email provider. 4 Apple's Files app lets you work with and share accessible files on the phone. 5

Convert the saved voice note to MP3

  1. Open the audio converter in an updated browser.
  2. Add the saved audio file, not a link to the chat.
  3. Choose MP3 and try 128 kbps for speech.
  4. Convert, then download the result.
  5. Check that the MP3 plays and has the expected duration.

If an .opus file does not appear in the picker, try showing all files. Renaming it to .mp3 does not convert the audio inside.

Pick a sensible quality setting

RecordingStarting choiceCheck before keeping it
Spoken message128 kbps MP3Clear words
Interview with music192 kbps MP3Speech and background detail
Recording to archiveKeep the received originalAvoid unnecessary conversions

These are practical choices, not upgrades to the original recording. Raising the bitrate will not fix muffled speech. The MP3 bitrate guide explains the tradeoff in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting a voice note improve its sound?

It will not restore missing detail. MP3 is useful when another app or device does not accept the original file.

Can I convert several voice notes together?

Yes. Add multiple saved files, but use smaller batches on a phone if memory is limited. Listen to the outputs before deleting your originals.

Why can't I find the voice note?

It may not be downloaded yet, may be in a restricted folder or may need to be exported from the chat. Sharing it to a folder you can access is usually easier than browsing private storage.

Does Imagyc download messages from WhatsApp?

No. It works with files you select on your device. It does not access chats or download from websites, and the conversion does not upload your audio.
