How to open iPhone photos anywhere

iPhones save photos as HEIC, an efficient format that plenty of things still can't open: Windows without an extension, many sign-up forms, company systems and older editors. Converted to JPG, the photo opens everywhere.

The conversion happens in your browser, with a HEIC reader that is only downloaded when you drop a file in that format. The photo is never sent to a server, which matters here more than anywhere: these are personal photos, of documents and of family.

Orientation is applied first (the photo won't come out sideways) and metadata is stripped along the way, including the GPS location the iPhone records in every photo. Want a smaller photo? Pick a width in pixels in the same pass.

Up to 10 photos at a time, downloaded one by one or as a .zip. Want an even lighter file? Tick WebP or AVIF as well and compare.

How to convert HEIC to JPG in 3 steps

  1. Move the iPhone photos to your computer (cable, AirDrop, iCloud or email) — or open this page on the iPhone itself.
  2. Drop the .heic files in the area above, up to 10 at a time. JPG is already ticked.
  3. Tap Compress (the same button converts) and download each JPG, or all of them with Download all (.zip).

What happens to the iPhone photo

A 12 MP iPhone photo comes out as a JPG with the same 4032 × 3024 pixels and upright, as it looks in your gallery: the orientation is applied before converting. The GPS location, date and device model that the iPhone records in every photo are left out of the new file.

If the photo is going to a website or a form with a size limit, choose a 1600 px width in the same pass. In our test, a 12 MP photo at that width came out at 166 KB.

Questions about HEIC and JPG

Why does the iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Because HEIC stores the same photo in much less space than JPG. It works well on iPhone and Mac; elsewhere, plenty of things still can’t open it: Windows without an extension, sign-up websites and older programs.

Can the iPhone take photos straight in JPG?

Yes: in Settings › Camera › Formats, choose “Most Compatible”. New photos are saved as JPG. The ones already in HEIC stay that way, and that’s what this page is for.

How do I open HEIC on Windows without converting?

Windows opens HEIC with the Microsoft Store extensions (“HEIF Image Extensions” plus the HEVC video one). To send the photo to someone or to a website, converting to JPG solves it for good, with nothing to install.

Does the photo lose quality as JPG?

Not visibly: the JPG keeps the same size in pixels. The file is usually larger than the HEIC because JPG compresses less — that’s the price of compatibility.

Can I convert on the iPhone itself?

Yes: open this page in Safari, tap the drop area and choose the photos. The JPGs are saved to your Downloads folder in the Files app.
