PNG to WebP: the same look, far lighter

WebP stores transparency just like PNG, but compresses much better. A logo, a cut-out product or an illustration in WebP usually ends up a fraction of the size, and the site loads faster, especially on phones.

Every current browser displays WebP: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. WordPress, Elementor and the major e-commerce platforms accept it. For a file that is going on a website, it is almost always the right swap.

Want to compare? Tick AVIF too, which is often smaller still, and see the sizes side by side before downloading. If the image is larger than the space it fills on the page, reduce its width in pixels in the same pass: that is the biggest saving there is.

Up to 10 images at a time, downloaded one by one or as a .zip, with no watermark. Metadata is stripped along the way.

How to convert PNG to WebP in 3 steps

  1. Drop your website’s PNGs in the area above — logo, cut-out product, illustration. WebP is already ticked.
  2. If the image is bigger than the space it fills on the site, choose a width in pixels too: it’s the biggest saving there is.
  3. Tap Compress, compare the sizes and swap the files on your site.

A real example, made with the tool

A cut-out product with a transparent background, a 560 × 604 PNG, weighed 205 KB. As WebP it came out at 27.5 KB — 87% smaller, transparency intact.

In a store with dozens of product photos, that difference decides whether the page opens right away on mobile data or keeps loading.

Questions about PNG and WebP

Does WebP work in every browser?

In every current one: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile.

Does WordPress accept WebP?

Yes, since version 5.8, and so do WooCommerce and Shopify. Upload the .webp file like any other image.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. WebP stores transparency just like PNG, so logos and cut-out products stay background-free.

WebP or AVIF?

AVIF is usually even smaller, but takes longer to create and some older programs can’t open it. Tick both and compare the sizes before deciding.

Does switching to WebP help with Google?

Google’s PageSpeed recommends serving images in modern formats such as WebP and AVIF, because pages load faster. And speed matters for people arriving from search.
