How to resize without losing sharpness

Type the width you need, in pixels, and drop your images. The height is worked out on its own, in proportion, and each file keeps its format. To change format in the same pass, tick JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Downscaling uses a Lanczos filter in linear light, the same kind of maths professional editors use: edges and text stay sharp, without the darkening simple resizers cause. Images with transparency stay transparent.

The tool only makes images smaller, never larger: enlarging can't create detail the photo doesn't have. In a batch, the cap is the width of the smallest image, so they all come out the same size.

What width should you use? For a website, the width of the space the image fills, doubled for high-density screens; the resolution guide shows how to measure it. For chat apps and email, 1600 px on the longer side is usually plenty.

How to resize an image in 3 steps

  1. Type the width you need, in pixels. The height is worked out for you, keeping the photo’s proportions.
  2. Drop the images in the area above, up to 10 at a time. If you like, also tick a format (JPG, WebP…) to convert in the same pass.
  3. Tap Compress and download the images at their new size.

A real example, made with the tool

A 12 MP photo (4032 × 3024 pixels) of 2.87 MB, resized to 1600 px wide, came out at 1600 × 1200 and 166 KB — 94% smaller.

At that size it still fills a laptop screen and comfortably fits email, form and marketplace limits.

Questions about resizing images

What width should I use for Instagram?

1080 px. Larger photos get shrunk by Instagram itself, which compresses them again; uploading at 1080 avoids that second compression.

And for WhatsApp and email?

1600 px on the longest side is usually enough: the photo stays sharp on phone and computer, at a fraction of the weight.

Can I make an image bigger?

No. The tool only shrinks, because enlarging doesn’t create detail the photo doesn’t have — it just makes the pixels bigger and the image blurry.

Does resizing reduce the file size?

A lot: the size drops roughly in proportion to the image’s area. In the example above, going from 4032 to 1600 px wide made the photo 94% smaller.

Does resizing distort the photo?

No: the height follows the width in the same proportion. Changing the frame’s shape, from rectangle to square, needs cropping, which this tool doesn’t do. To pick a width for a website, see the resolution guide.
