When converting JPG to PNG makes sense

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it is, with no further loss each time the file is saved. That makes it the right format for an image you will keep editing, for screenshots, for artwork with small text, and for systems that only accept PNG.

Converting does not bring back the quality the JPG already lost: the PNG comes out identical to the JPG, just in a lossless format, and almost always larger. If you want a lighter file for a website, go the other way: JPG, WebP or AVIF.

A transparent background does not appear on its own either: JPG has no transparency, so the converted PNG keeps the photo's background. To remove it, use the background remover, which gives you a transparent PNG.

Everything runs in your browser: up to 10 images at a time, no usage limit, and metadata (GPS, camera, date) is stripped along the way.

How to convert JPG to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Drop the JPG photos in the area above, up to 10 at a time. PNG is already ticked.
  2. If the PNG is going to a website or a message, check the size before downloading: it will be larger than the JPG.
  3. Tap Compress and download each PNG, or all of them as a .zip.

A real example: why the PNG gets bigger

A 12 MP JPG photo of 2.87 MB became a 4.96 MB PNG — 73% larger, with exactly the same image. That’s normal: PNG keeps everything without lossy compression, including what the JPG had already simplified.

So the conversion is worth it when PNG is required or when the image will still be edited many times — not to save space. To make it light, go the other way: JPG, WebP or AVIF.

Questions about JPG and PNG

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. What the JPG lost when it was saved doesn’t come back. PNG only ensures that, from now on, the image loses nothing more each time it’s saved.

Does the PNG come with a transparent background?

No: JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the photo’s background. For a transparent background, use the background remover, which gives you a PNG with no background.

When is PNG the best choice?

For screenshots, artwork with text, images that will go through several edits, and systems that only accept PNG, such as some sign-up forms and online print shops.

Does the photo’s data go into the PNG?

No. GPS location, date and camera model are left out of the PNG.

Can I make the PNG smaller?

You can reduce the width in pixels in the same pass, which shrinks the file a lot. If size matters more than format, consider WebP: it can also be lossless and is much smaller.
